The S.R. Nagar Police, Hyderabad, have arrested a habitual cyber crime offender involved in multiple cases of online cheating, impersonation and digital fraud. The arrest was carried out under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police S.V. Raghavendra Rao, Station House Officer B. Srinivas Reddy, and Detective Inspector K. Srikanth, with assistance from Woman Head Constable K. Deena.
The accused, Jala Sai Ram Reddy (27), a Rapido rider from Karimnagar with native roots in Parkal, Warangal, had been duping innocent victims by posing as a Cyber Crime Police Officer. He allegedly created fake female profiles on social media platforms, including ShareChat, to gain victims’ trust. Once he obtained their phone numbers, he contacted them, threatened them with fabricated allegations of obscene online activity, and extorted money via UPI and other digital payment methods. Victims were also instructed to factory reset their phones to destroy digital evidence.
In the current case, a student lost ₹97,540 through multiple digital transactions. The complaint was lodged through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which led to the investigation and subsequent arrest.
Police revealed that the accused confessed to his involvement in multiple similar cases. Technical verification showed that he is connected to 44 cyber fraud petitions across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, including registered cases and complaints on the NCRP portal.
Investigations also revealed that the accused, along with associates, misused multiple SIM cards, mobile phones, bank accounts, and UPI scanners to commit fraud. Local shopkeepers’ bank accounts were allegedly used as intermediaries to route cheated money.
Authorities warned the public to remain vigilant, noting that police never demand money or fines through phone calls or digital payment platforms. There is no concept of “digital arrest” in law. Any such calls should be immediately reported to the nearest police station or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
