Manipur witnessed a fresh wave of violence and protests shortly after the formation of a new BJP-led government, raising concerns over the return of normalcy in the conflict hit state.
The unrest broke out following the appointment of a new Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers after the withdrawal of President’s Rule. While the government’s formation was expected to restore stability, several areas instead saw protests and clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
Reports said violence flared in parts of Churachandpur and surrounding districts, where protestors expressed anger over political appointments, particularly the naming of a Deputy Chief Minister. Demonstrations soon turned violent in some locations, with stone pelting and confrontations with police and paramilitary forces.
Security personnel used crowd control measures to disperse the protesters and prevent the situation from escalating further. Authorities imposed restrictions in sensitive areas and stepped up patrols to maintain law and order.
The protests are rooted in long standing ethnic tensions between the Meitei community and tribal groups such as the Kuki Zo and Naga communities. The conflict, which began in May 2023 over issues related to land rights, reservation policies and political representation, has resulted in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of people.
Although the new government was sworn in with the hope of political stability, sections of the population remain dissatisfied, accusing political leaders of ignoring community concerns. Shutdowns were reported in some tribal dominated areas, while local groups held demonstrations against the recent political developments.
Government officials appealed for calm and said efforts were underway to restore peace through dialogue. “The administration is committed to maintaining law and order and addressing grievances through democratic means,” a senior official said.
Analysts believe the renewed violence highlights the deep mistrust between communities and the fragile nature of peace in the state. They warn that without sustained political dialogue and confidence building measures, further unrest cannot be ruled out.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened across Manipur, with additional forces deployed in vulnerable districts. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid rumours and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
The situation remains tense, with officials closely monitoring developments and promising strict action against those involved in violence.
