Telangana has recorded nearly one sixth of all food-poisoning deaths in India in 2023, raising serious concerns over food safety and hygiene standards across the state. Official mortality data shows that out of the total food poisoning deaths reported nationwide, Telangana accounted for a significantly high share.

Health officials say the high number of fatalities is linked to Unsafe food handling, Poor hygiene practices and Delayed medical treatment. Many of the incidents were traced to large gatherings such as weddings, religious functions and institutional kitchens where food is prepared in bulk and often stored improperly.

Medical experts have warned that contaminated water, unclean cooking surfaces, improper refrigeration and reuse of leftover food are major causes of food borne illnesses. They also pointed out that lack of trained food handlers and weak monitoring mechanisms have worsened the situation.

Public health specialists have described the trend as a systemic failure in food safety management. They said that inspections are often irregular and that awareness about safe cooking and storage practices remains low, especially in rural and semi urban areas.

Government Action

Following the alarming data, the Telangana food safety department has announced stricter inspections and enforcement measures. Officials are focusing on checking kitchens at public events, hostels, schools and roadside eateries. Training programmes for food handlers are being expanded to improve hygiene standards.

The government is also strengthening food testing facilities and directing districts to ensure proper staffing of food safety officers. Awareness campaigns are being carried out under food safety initiatives to educate the public about clean cooking methods and the dangers of consuming unhygienic food.

Doctors have urged people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or stomach pain after eating outside food. They have also advised avoiding food prepared in unhygienic conditions and ensuring that drinking water is safe.

The sharp rise in food poisoning deaths has highlighted the urgent need for better regulation, stronger monitoring and greater public awareness to prevent avoidable loss of life.
