Dense fog enveloped Delhi NCR and large parts of North India early Monday morning, severely disrupting air and rail travel and causing widespread inconvenience to passengers.
At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport more than 120 flights were cancelled due to extremely poor visibility. Nearly 200 additional flights were delayed, while several others were diverted to nearby airports as a safety measure. Airlines including IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet issued advisories urging passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport.
Rail Services Hit
Rail operations across North India were also affected, with numerous long distance and suburban trains running late. Reduced visibility forced trains to operate at slower speeds leading to delays of several hours on key routes connecting Delhi with Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar.
Weather Situation
The India Meteorological Department reported very low visibility levels in the early morning hours and issued an orange alert for dense fog conditions across the region. In addition to fog, cold wave conditions and poor air quality further worsened visibility, particularly in the national capital.
Meteorologists warned that foggy conditions are likely to continue over the next few days especially during night and early morning hours, potentially prolonging travel disruptions.
Advisory to Passengers
Authorities have advised travellers to:
-
Check real time flight and train updates before travelling
-
Reach airports and railway stations well in advance
-
Follow airline and railway advisories closely
The situation remains under monitoring as weather conditions continue to affect daily life and transport services across North India.
