A political storm is intensifying nationwide over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with multiple opposition parties alleging that the exercise “Exposes” the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and reveals a coordinated attempt to influence upcoming elections. The BJP however has firmly rejected these allegations, calling them “Baseless and politically motivated.”
Opposition Calls SIR a “Vote Theft Mechanism”
Leaders from various opposition parties have argued that SIR is being misused to delete voter names in bulk from constituencies where BJP faces stronger resistance. They claim that:
- Thousands of names especially from minority and backward communities have been removed without proper verification.
- Large scale manipulation of electoral rolls has occurred in certain districts.
- SIR results in selective disenfranchisement that benefits the ruling party.
Some parties have described SIR as “Institutionalised vote theft,” accusing the Election Commission of operating under pressure and failing to act independently.
BJP Defends the Process
The BJP has countered the allegations, insisting that SIR is a standard and necessary process to clean up voter lists and remove fake, duplicate, or ineligible entries. Party leaders maintain that:
- Opposition parties are spreading false narratives to cover up their electoral weaknesses.
- The exercise strengthens, not weakens, democratic integrity.
- Every political party had the opportunity to observe and participate in the SIR process.
The BJP argues that SIR is being unfairly politicised and that any errors can be corrected through established mechanisms.

The controversy has caused significant confusion among voters, especially in states where large numbers of names were reportedly removed. Civil society organisations have urged for transparency and independent audit of deletions and additions made during SIR.
