Cyber criminals use fake profiles to trap victims, police warn

Law enforcement and cyber security agencies have issued a fresh warning about the growing use of fake online profiles by cyber criminals to deceive and exploit unsuspecting users. Officials say criminals are increasingly posing as friends, professionals or romantic partners on social media and messaging platforms to gain trust before stealing money or personal information.

According to cyber crime investigators, scammers often create convincing profiles using stolen photos and fabricated identities. They begin with friendly conversations and gradually build emotional or financial dependence. Once trust is established, victims are asked to share personal details, transfer money, or invest in fraudulent schemes.

Authorities say common traps include fake job offers, online relationships, lottery wins and urgent medical or emergency requests. In many cases, victims only realize they have been scammed after losing large sums of money or having their bank accounts and digital identities compromised.

Cyber experts advise users to never share personal information, such as bank details, passwords, OTPs, or copies of identity documents, with people they meet online. They also warn against sending money or gift cards to strangers, even if the story appears genuine.

Police have urged the public to verify identities before trusting anyone online and to report suspicious activity immediately. “Criminals thrive on emotional manipulation and urgency. A moment of doubt can prevent a lifetime of regret” an official said.

With internet usage rising across all age groups, authorities stress that digital safety is a shared responsibility. Users are encouraged to strengthen privacy settings, avoid unknown links and remain alert to unusual behavior in online conversations.

The message from cyber security agencies is clear: think before you trust online, because cyber safety depends on informed and cautious digital behavior.
