The results of the Telangana Municipal Elections 2026 have given a clear edge to the ruling Indian National Congress across urban local bodies in the state. Vote counting held on 13 February showed Congress winning and leading in a large number of wards and municipalities.
Party wise Ward Performance (approx.)
- Indian National Congress (Congress):
1,450+ wards
Emerged as the dominant party, securing control of most municipalities and several municipal corporations. - Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS):
750+ wards
Trailed Congress in most districts and lost ground in key urban centres. - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP):
280+ wards
Finished third in most municipalities, with limited urban consolidation. - All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM):
65-70 wards
Retained its hold in traditional strongholds and minority dominated wards but failed to expand significantly across the state. - Independents & Others:
100+ wards
AIMIM Performance
AIMIM’s performance remained localized. While it maintained influence in select pockets of Hyderabad and a few towns in north Telangana, its overall presence in municipal bodies stayed limited.
Verdict on AIMIM:
Stable to marginal increase in seats, but no statewide breakthrough.
Political Message
The results underline a strong urban mandate for Congress, erosion of BRS dominance in towns, and BJP’s continued struggle to emerge as a major urban force. AIMIM remains influential only in specific pockets.
