Congress Alleges BJP Worker Voted Twice, Election Commission Responds

The political atmosphere in Bihar intensified on election result day after the Congress party alleged that a BJP worker had cast votes in two different states, prompting a response from the Election Commission of India (ECI). The controversy emerged as the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a sweeping victory in the 243 member Assembly.

Congress Raises Double Voting Allegation

According to senior Congress leaders, a BJP activist was found registered on two separate voter lists one in Bihar and one in Uttarakhand. The party claims the individual participated in both elections, calling it a clear violation of electoral law.

Congress leaders argue that this incident is a symptom of a much larger issue alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls carried out ahead of the polls. They claim thousands of legitimate voters were removed from the lists, while some duplicate or questionable entries remained.

The party has demanded a formal inquiry and immediate corrective action.

ECI Rejects Claims of Systemic Lapses

The Election Commission has not directly addressed the specific double voting allegation but has defended the overall election process. Officials reiterated that the revision of voter lists was completed according to standard procedures, with adequate checks and verification layers.

However, the Commission acknowledged that isolated discrepancies can occur in a large scale electoral system and said any concrete evidence submitted by political parties will be examined.

NDA Celebrates Landslide Victory

The NDA’s overwhelming win crossing the 200 seat mark has been hailed by the ruling alliance as a mandate for Continuity, Governance and Development. BJP leaders dismissed the opposition’s allegations as “Excuses” following a decisive defeat.

Opposition parties, however, insist the voting patterns and turnout trends are “abnormal,” claiming that the outcome does not reflect ground realities and urging detailed scrutiny.

Wider Questions on Electoral Integrity

The controversy comes at a time when trust in electoral institutions is under heightened public scrutiny.
Key concerns raised include:

  • Dual enrolment across states
  • Exclusion of eligible voters during list revision
  • Weak verification mechanisms
  • Possible misuse of voter ID documents

Political analysts say the EC’s response in the coming days will be crucial in maintaining public confidence.

What Happens Next

  • Congress is preparing to file formal complaints and may seek legal intervention if the Commission does not open an inquiry.
  • The EC is expected to issue clarifications or initiate verification if substantive evidence is provided.
  • Opposition parties may consolidate their grievances into a larger demand for electoral transparency reforms.

Why This Matters

Free and Fair elections are the backbone of democracy. Even a single confirmed case of double voting can raise serious concerns about procedural weaknesses. As Bihar’s 2025 results reshape the state’s political landscape, ensuring electoral integrity remains a top priority for both voters and institutions.
