Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is set to lay the foundation stone for Phase II and III of the Godavari Drinking Water Project an ambitious initiative worth ₹7,360 crore aimed at revitalizing the Musi River and bolstering Hyderabad’s drinking water supply.
Under this project, 20 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water will be diverted from Mallanna Sagar to the twin reservoirs, Himayatsagar and Osmansagar. Of this, 17.5 TMC is earmarked for Hyderabad’s drinking water needs, while 2.5 TMC will support the rejuvenation of the Musi River. The scheme is expected to be completed by December 2027.
The project follows a Hybrid Annuity Model the state will fund 40% of the cost, and a private contractor will finance the remaining 60%.
Once completed, this phase will elevate Hyderabad’s water supply capacity from 580 million gallons per day (MGD) to 880 MGD. Additionally, the government plans to construct seven supplementary reservoirs along the water route to further strengthen supply networks.
Simultaneously, CM Revanth Reddy will inaugurate a ₹1,200 crore program featuring 71 new reservoirs across Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Outer Ring Road zones. Fifteen of these reservoirs are newly built and expected to provide drinking water to 25 lakh residents spanning 14 mandals.
In a related development, the CM will also launch a ₹298 crore initiative to improve drinking water and sewage infrastructure in the developing Kokapet-Neopolis SEZ area, slated to serve 13 lakh people within two years.
