Amid rising concerns from Waqf Boards and custodians across the country, the Union Government has clarified that the Deadline for uploading Waqf property details on the UMEED Portal will not be extended. However announcing significant relief the Centre said that No penalties or punitive action will be taken for the next three months against those who missed the 6 month mandated deadline.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that while the legal timeframe under the Waqf (Amendment) Act has technically ended the government recognises the challenges faced by many Mutawallis and institutions in collecting historical documents and completing digital uploads.
Tribunal Route Open for Individual Extensions
Following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling refusing a blanket extension custodians who were unable to register their properties can now approach their respective Waqf Tribunals which are empowered to consider Case by case extensions.
Officials said this mechanism is meant to ensure that genuine cases receive relief without affecting the overall timeline of the digitisation process.
Widespread Appeals for More Time
States including Telangana, Kerala, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh had requested additional time citing:
- Technical issues with the portal
- Large volumes of old records
- Manpower shortages
- Incomplete surveys and boundary disputes
Community leaders Waqf Boards and several Muslim organisations also sought an extension arguing that strict deadlines could lead to unintended lapses and property disputes.
Relief but Uncertainty on the Ground
The 3 month penalty waiver has brought temporary relief, but many institutions continue to express concern. Several waqf bodies say they need more clarity on tribunal procedures and documentation requirements.
What Happens Next
- Waqf properties can still be uploaded on the UMEED portal.
- No fines penalties or adverse action for the next Three months.
- Custodians needing more time must file for extensions before their State’s Waqf Tribunal.
- The Ministry of Minority Affairs will monitor progress during the relaxation period.
Community Reaction
Many community groups welcomed the penalty relaxation but reiterated their demand for an official nationwide extension. They argue that digital compliance should not lead to hardship for smaller waqf institutions that lack technical support.
