BRS Leader Urges Telangana Government to Ban Toxic Weedicide Paraquat

Ban Toxic Weedicide Paraquat

Hyderabad: A leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi has called on the state government to impose an immediate ban on the use of the weedicide paraquat, citing serious risks to public health and the environment.

Addressing a press interaction, the party leader said paraquat is one of the most toxic herbicides commonly used in agriculture and has been linked to severe poisoning cases, organ damage, and even fatalities when ingested or inhaled. He warned that farmers and agricultural workers are particularly vulnerable due to frequent exposure during spraying.

The leader also highlighted environmental concerns, stating that the chemical contaminates soil and water sources and poses a threat to livestock and wildlife. He argued that continued use of paraquat undermines sustainable farming practices and endangers rural communities.

BRS representatives urged the state government to follow the example of several countries that have restricted or banned paraquat due to its hazardous nature. They also called for the promotion of safer and eco-friendly alternatives for weed control, along with awareness programmes for farmers about the dangers of chemical herbicides.

Officials from the agriculture department said they were reviewing the demand and studying scientific reports on the impact of paraquat. A decision would be taken after consultations with experts and stakeholders, they added.

The issue has gained attention amid growing concern over pesticide related health problems in farming regions of Telangana. Farmer groups and environmental activists have welcomed the call for a ban, urging authorities to prioritise human safety over chemical dependence in agriculture.
