BMC Power Play: BJP – UBT Buzz Grows as Shinde Camp Loses Ground

BMC Power Play

Political uncertainty continues to grip Mumbai as intense speculation builds around a possible tactical understanding between the BJP and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The unfolding developments suggest that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction may be increasingly sidelined in the post-election power play.

The BMC elections have delivered a fractured mandate, with no party securing a clear majority in the 227 member civic body. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party, while Shiv Sena (UBT) has retained a strong second position. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena, however, has lagged behind with a significantly smaller tally, weakening its leverage despite being a formal ally of the BJP at the state level.

With the numbers falling short of a majority, behind the scenes negotiations have intensified. Political circles are abuzz with talk that the BJP may explore issue based or indirect cooperation with Shiv Sena (UBT) to ensure control over key BMC posts, including the mayoralty and important standing committees. Such a move, though politically ironic given their bitter split, is being viewed as a purely arithmetic and strategic decision rather than an ideological reconciliation.

Statements from Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have further fueled speculation. Senior leader Sanjay Raut has indicated that his party would never align with the Shinde faction, which he continues to label as “Breakaway” and “illegitimate.” At the same time, his remarks have been interpreted as leaving the door open for flexible political arrangements if it serves to block Shinde’s camp from gaining control in Mumbai.

Sources suggest that the BJP, confident of its position as the largest party, may be reluctant to concede the mayor’s post to the Shinde faction, instead keeping it for itself with external or silent support. This has reportedly caused unease within the Shinde camp, which had expected greater rewards for its alliance with the BJP.

Adding another layer to the unfolding drama, sporadic defections, cross party messaging, and public statements hinting at “reverse poaching” have kept the political temperature high. Meanwhile, other players like the MNS and smaller parties are closely watching the situation, aware that even a few votes could tilt the balance.

For now, no formal alliance has been announced. But the evolving equations clearly point to a shift in Mumbai’s political centre of gravity, with the BJP weighing its options and Shiv Sena (UBT) quietly regaining relevance, while Eknath Shinde’s faction finds itself increasingly marginal in the BMC power struggle.

The coming days are expected to be crucial as negotiations continue and the fight for India’s richest municipal body enters its decisive phase.
