A political controversy erupted in Maharashtra after reports surfaced of local level post poll tie-ups involving BJP, Congress and AIMIM in certain municipal councils. The developments prompted swift reactions from the leadership of all three parties, each moving to clarify its official position and deny any formal alliance.
BJP’s View
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded strongly after it emerged that some of its local councillors had entered into post election arrangements with rival parties.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on January 7, ordered an immediate exit from any such arrangements and stated that:
- BJP has no alliance with Congress or AIMIM at any level
- Local leaders acted without authorisation
- Such tie-ups are against party ideology
- Disciplinary action would be taken against those involved
The BJP leadership stressed that local political convenience cannot override the party’s core principles.
Congress View
The Indian National Congress also distanced itself from the developments, particularly in the Ambernath Municipal Council, where its councillors had joined a local governing front with BJP leaders.
Congress clarified that:
- The decision was taken without approval from the party leadership
- Congress does not support alliances with BJP
- Councillors involved were suspended for indiscipline
The party reiterated that its political stand against the BJP remains unchanged.
AIMIM’s View
The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) categorically denied reports suggesting it had approached or allied with the BJP.
AIMIM leadership stated that:
- The party did not initiate or agree to any alliance with BJP
- Reports of a BJP AIMIM tie-up are misleading
- Any participation by individual councillors in local groupings was unauthorised
- Strict action would be taken against those violating party discipline
AIMIM emphasised that its political position remains consistent.
What Led to the Controversy
The issue arose from post-election arithmetic in municipal councils, where councillors from different parties temporarily supported common fronts to gain control of civic bodies. These arrangements were interpreted as political alliances, triggering strong reactions from party leaderships.
Conclusion
As of January 7, 2026, all three parties have made their positions clear:
- BJP rejected the tie-ups and ordered an immediate withdrawal
- Congress suspended leaders involved in unauthorised arrangements
- AIMIM denied approaching or allying with BJP
The controversy reflects local level political manoeuvring, not official alliances between the parties.
