Bangladesh Withdraws from T20 World Cup Matches Scheduled in India

In a major development ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh has decided not to play its scheduled matches in India, citing security concerns and rising diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that the national team will not travel to India for its World Cup fixtures. The decision follows consultations with the Bangladesh government, which reportedly advised against travel due to concerns over player safety and overall well-being.

Background to the Decision

The move comes amid strained relations between India and Bangladesh, triggered in part by a recent controversy involving Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. His sudden release from an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise led to public outrage in Bangladesh and heightened political tensions. The issue escalated further when Bangladesh authorities imposed restrictions on the broadcast of IPL matches in the country.

Officials in Bangladesh believe the current atmosphere could pose risks to players, support staff and officials if they travel to India during the tournament.

Request to ICC

The BCB has requested the ICC to shift Bangladesh’s World Cup matches to an alternative venue, preferably Sri Lanka, which is also a co-host of the tournament. Bangladesh has clarified that it is not withdrawing from the tournament itself, but only seeking a venue change for its matches scheduled in India.

Impact on the Tournament

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place from February to March 2026, with matches spread across India and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh was originally slated to play several group-stage matches at Indian venues such as Kolkata and Mumbai.

If the ICC approves the request, the tournament schedule may need last-minute adjustments, impacting logistics, ticketing and broadcast planning. The ICC is currently reviewing the situation and is expected to take a final decision soon.

What Lies Ahead

Bangladesh remains committed to participating in the T20 World Cup and is awaiting the ICC’s response. The situation highlights how geopolitical and diplomatic issues can influence international sporting events, even at the highest level.
