After spending nearly two years in Sitapur Jail, senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan was released on September 23, 2025. His release was celebrated by supporters as a victory of justice. In his first interview following his release, Khan opened up about his experiences during incarceration, his views on leadership, and his unwavering commitment to the SP.

Khan addressed the numerous allegations against him, including charges related to petty thefts such as chickens, goats, buffaloes, and books. He dismissed these as politically motivated conspiracies, stating that during his time in jail, he focused on spiritual reflection and maintained that investigative agencies found no substantial evidence against him.

Reflecting on his time in prison, Khan described the conditions as harsh. He was kept in a small cell measuring 11 by 7 feet, surrounded by two inmates placed deliberately so that he could not attempt suicide. Former Rajya Sabha MP Shahid Siddiqui claimed that Khan and his son were victims of slow poisoning during their time in jail, allegedly due to the food served. As a result, Khan reportedly began cooking his own meals to safeguard his health.

Khan reaffirmed his loyalty to the Samajwadi Party and its leadership. He stated that SP chief Akhilesh Yadav holds the same respect and position for him as SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav once did. He emphasized that he has a character that is not for sale and remains committed to the party despite political challenges.
