Alarming Rise in Diabetes in Telangana Nearly 13% of Population Affected

Hyderabad: Telangana is facing a serious public health challenge as diabetes cases continue to rise sharply across the state. Recent health data shows that about 13% of the state’s population nearly 39 lakh people are diabetic, placing Telangana among the top four states in India with the highest diabetes prevalence.

Urban Lifestyle Behind Surge

Health experts say the steep rise in diabetes is largely driven by rapid urbanisation, changes in diet, and lifestyle patterns. Increased consumption of processed foods, sugary beverages, and high carbohydrate meals has become common, especially in major cities like Hyderabad.

Doctors also point out that sedentary habits, long work hours, lack of sleep, and reduced physical activity are major contributors. Rising income levels in urban regions have also led to an increase in unhealthy food choices and irregular eating patterns.

Young People at Risk

One of the most worrying trends is the rise of diabetes among young adults even those below 30. Many of these cases are discovered during routine health check ups rather than due to symptoms, indicating a silent spread of lifestyle related diabetes.

Physicians say that obesity, stress, and insufficient exercise are driving this trend, and warn that if not addressed early, young diabetics may face severe complications later in life.

Government and Health Department Response

The Telangana Health Department has intensified screening under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases. Free treatment and regular follow ups are being provided for those diagnosed, and awareness campaigns are underway to promote healthier habits.

Authorities are advising citizens to reduce intake of sugar, deep fried foods, and refined carbohydrates, while increasing fiber, protein, and physical activity. Public health messages are also stressing the importance of regular exercise, better sleep, and stress management.

Growing Pressure on Healthcare System

With nearly 40 lakh people living with diabetes, public health experts warn that Telangana’s healthcare system could face increasing pressure if the trend continues. Long term complications such as kidney disease, heart problems, nerve damage, and stroke could significantly strain resources.

Officials and medical professionals emphasise that early intervention, preventive screenings, and public awareness are crucial to controlling the spread.
