Nepal is facing a major recovery challenge after devastating floods and landslides struck the country’s border region with China last week. Authorities say around 20,000 homes may need to be rebuilt, while rescue teams continue searching for thousands of missing people.
The disaster began on August 26, when a glacier collapse sent huge amounts of water, ice, rocks and mud into communities near the Nepal-China border. Entire villages were damaged or swept away.
Thousands of Homes Destroyed
- Officials estimate that around 7,500 houses were completely destroyed, either washed away or buried under mud and debris. Many other homes were badly damaged and may not be safe to live in.
- Authorities are considering safer locations for rebuilding, as returning to some of the affected areas could put residents at further risk.
Search for Missing People Continues
