RBI Sounds Caution as Inflation Rises

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised its economic projections for the current financial year, raising its inflation forecast while lowering growth expectations, signaling a more challenging period ahead for the Indian economy.

In its latest monetary policy review, the RBI increased its FY27 inflation forecast from 4.6% to 5.1% and reduced its GDP growth projection from 6.9% to 6.6%. The central bank also kept the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, opting for caution amid rising global and domestic uncertainties.

The revised outlook reflects mounting concerns over the impact of geopolitical tensions in West Asia, elevated crude oil prices, supply chain disruptions, and weather related risks. The RBI warned that prolonged conflict in the region could continue to push up energy costs, while concerns about a weaker monsoon and possible El Niño conditions may affect agricultural output and food prices.

Higher inflation and slower economic growth present a difficult challenge for policymakers. Rising prices can reduce household purchasing power, while slower growth may affect Business activity, Investment and Job creation. The RBI acknowledged that inflationary pressures have intensified, even as growth prospects remain vulnerable to external shocks.

Despite the downgrade, India’s economy remains among the fastest growing major economies in the world. Recent economic data showed strong growth in the January-March quarter, supported by investment, construction activity and agricultural output. However, economists expect growth to moderate in the coming quarters as higher energy costs and global uncertainties weigh on demand.

The central bank emphasized that it will remain data dependent and closely monitor developments in inflation, oil prices, global markets, and weather conditions before making further policy adjustments.
