AIMIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi on Thursday raised serious concerns in the Telangana Legislative Assembly over the functioning of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and worsening civic conditions in the city.
Participating in the discussion on urban governance, Owaisi questioned the government’s preparedness to handle Hyderabad’s growing population and expanding municipal limits, stating that basic civic issues are being ignored.
Key Issues Raised by Akbaruddin Owaisi
- Illegal Constructions Across the City
Owaisi said unauthorised constructions are increasing unchecked, questioning why GHMC has failed to take timely action. He pointed out that illegal buildings are affecting road widths, drainage systems and public safety, and demanded stronger enforcement mechanisms. - GHMC Manpower and Efficiency
He questioned whether GHMC has adequate staff and resources to manage the city, especially after expansion of its jurisdiction. Without sufficient officers on the ground, he said, governance would remain ineffective. - Parking Problems and Traffic Congestion
Highlighting Hyderabad’s worsening traffic situation, Owaisi said poor parking management and roadside encroachments are choking main roads, adding to daily congestion faced by commuters. - Traffic Signals and Poor Regulation
He criticised the lack of proper traffic signals and coordination, stating that traffic flow is poorly managed at major junctions, leading to frequent jams and accidents. - Police Challans and Accountability
Raising questions on traffic policing, Owaisi said that instead of regulating traffic, police are focusing mainly on issuing challans through cameras. He asked the government to clarify where the revenue collected from traffic fines is being utilised.
Support for Development, Call for Course Correction
Clarifying his stand, Akbaruddin Owaisi said that he fully welcomes large scale development projects and investments aimed at transforming Hyderabad. However, he stressed that small but crucial corrections in planning, enforcement and civic management are necessary to ensure real progress. He said addressing everyday issues such as traffic discipline, parking, illegal constructions and GHMC efficiency would help develop, glow and shine Hyderabad in a sustainable and citizen friendly manner.
Call for Accountability
The AIMIM leader urged the state government to ensure greater transparency, better coordination between departments, and accountability in GHMC functioning, warning that neglecting civic issues would directly impact public safety and quality of life.
