Schengen Style Unified GCC Visa Set for Launch by 2026

Dubai: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have approved a landmark Unified Tourist Visa, allowing visitors to travel freely across six Gulf nations under a single permit a move being hailed as the Middle East’s version of the Schengen Visa.

The unified visa, officially called the “GCC Grand Tours Visa”, will cover the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, enabling tourists to move seamlessly between these countries for short term stays.

Launch Timeline

According to the Saudi Minister of Tourism, the rollout is expected in phases, with a pilot launch by the end of 2025 and full implementation by 2026. The system has already received joint approval from GCC interior and tourism ministries, marking a major milestone in regional integration.

Cost and Validity

Early estimates suggest the visa will cost between US $90 and $130 (approximately AED 330 – 480), with stay durations ranging from 30 to 90 days. Final pricing and eligibility criteria are still under discussion among member nations.

How It Works

The visa system is modelled after Europe’s Schengen framework, offering both single country and multi country options. It will initially cater to tourists and short term visitors, with the potential for later expansion to business and cultural programs.

Officials say the unified permit will simplify cross border travel, eliminating the need for multiple applications and encouraging visitors to explore the Gulf region as a single destination.

Regional Benefits

Tourism experts describe the move as a strategic leap for the Gulf, expected to boost Regional tourism, Hospitality and Retail sectors. The initiative aligns with each country’s economic diversification goals under Vision 2030 frameworks, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE’s efforts to attract millions of international visitors annually.

“The Unified GCC Visa represents a new era of collaboration and economic growth. It’s not just a travel document it’s a symbol of regional unity,” said a senior GCC tourism official.

Unresolved Details

While the framework has been approved, specific implementation timelines, online application systems and nationality lists are yet to be confirmed. Officials emphasize that the visa is intended solely for tourism and not for employment or residency.

Outlook

With preparations underway, the unified visa is expected to transform travel across the Middle East, positioning the GCC as one of the world’s most accessible and connected tourist regions by 2026.
