Ladakh Tensions: Section 163 Imposed in Kargil Amid Shutdown and Protests

Authorities in Ladakh have imposed Section 163 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in Kargil following fresh incidents of violence in the region. The order restricts large gatherings and enforces strict law and order measures to prevent further unrest.

The Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) has called for a complete shutdown, leading to the closure of shops, markets, and business establishments. Streets in Kargil town wore a deserted look on Friday, with transport services also remaining largely off the roads.

Security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain calm and prevent escalation. According to officials, the violence stemmed from tensions related to local political and administrative issues, with the KDA demanding stronger constitutional safeguards for the people of Ladakh.

The district administration has urged residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumors, assuring that dialogue with local groups is underway. Meanwhile, the KDA has stated that its protest will continue until its demands are addressed, including full statehood and protection of land, jobs, and cultural rights.

This marks another flashpoint in Ladakh’s ongoing struggle for greater autonomy and representation, highlighting the region’s growing political and social unrest since its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.
