Indian Railways is introducing a major change starting October 1, 2025. For online booking of general reserved train tickets via IRCTC website or app, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be permitted to book during the first 15 minutes after the reservation window opens. The move aims to curb misuse and give genuine passengers better access during the high demand booking period.
What Is Changing
- The new mandate applies to general reserved tickets booked online.
- This “first 15 minutes” rule means only users who have linked their IRCTC account with Aadhaar will be able to book during that window. After 15 minutes, booking will open to all users.
- The existing restrictions on ticket agents during the opening minutes of booking will continue.
What Will Stay the Same
- Bookings at PRS counters (railway booking counters) will continue as before.
- The restriction on ticket agents booking at counters during the first 10 minutes remains unchanged.
Why This Is Being Introduced
- To prevent bulk or scalper bookings made by unauthorized agents at the exact moment the window opens.
- To ensure genuine passengers have a fair chance to secure tickets during peak demand.
- To improve transparency and prevent misuse of the reservation system.
What Passengers Need to Do
- Passengers must link their Aadhaar with their IRCTC account before October 1.
- Aadhaar authentication will be required if booking in the first 15 minutes after the reservation window opens.
- After 15 minutes, normal booking rules will apply for all users.
Implications
- The measure is expected to reduce ticket hoarding and ensure fairness.
- However, passengers without Aadhaar authentication may face difficulties if they try to book early.
- Authorities are advising users to complete Aadhaar verification well in advance.
