Nepal Gen Z Protests Escalate: Social Media Ban Lifted After Deadly Clashes

Young people across Nepal have launched mass protests against corruption, economic stagnation, and a controversial government decision to block access to 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter).

The protests, led mainly by Gen Z, spread from Kathmandu to cities such as Itahari, Biratnagar, and Pokhara, quickly gaining momentum. Demonstrations turned violent as security forces responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, and, in some cases, live ammunition. At least 19 people have been killed and hundreds injured, with some reports placing injuries at over 300.

Amid mounting pressure, the Nepal government lifted the social media ban. The move came after severe backlash and the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who accepted responsibility for the handling of the protests.

While the immediate demand to restore social media access has been met, protesters are continuing their call for deeper reforms, including stronger action against corruption, transparency in governance, and systemic political changes.

The Gen Z protests mark a historic moment in Nepal, showcasing the power of digitally connected youth to challenge government policies and demand accountability.
